What is the difference between vegan and vegetarian?

A vegetarian person might eat dairy, eggs and/or honey and not eat meat and fish.
A vegan never eats any animal products.

Which ingredients are not vegan?
  • Meat (even if it’s from animals that “lived happily” on open fields or family farms)
  • Marine animals (fish, octopus, shrimp, etc.)
  • Dairy (even if that milk is organic or lactose-free)
  • Eggs
  • Butter
  • Fish roe
  • Lanolin (an ingredient extracted from sheep’s wool)
  • Honey (even if beekeepers “love” their bees)
What can I replace animal products with to make a vegan dish?

Instead of meat, you can put lentils, chickpeas, mushrooms, soy/tofu.
Instead of animal milk, you can put plant-based milk. There are plant-based milks in various flavors: almond, soy, vanilla, rice, oat, chestnut.
Instead of cheese made from animal milk, you can put vegetable cheese. There are all types of vegan cheeses; yellow and white (feta) and gouda and cheddar.
Instead of butter, you can put margarine.

In general, you can Google or YouTube the dish you want and write the word vegan next to it, so you can find vegan versions of that dish.

What should I look out for before cooking for a vegan?
  • If a food contains even a “little bit” of milk, or meat broth, or butter, or any other animal product, then that food is NOT vegan
  • If a food (eg french fries) has been cooked with oil that was previously used to fry meats or other animal products, then that food is NOT vegan
  • If a food was cooked in a utensil in which animal products were previously cooked and that utensil was not washed, then that food is NOT vegan
  • If a food was cooked next to or with animal products (eg meat with baked potatoes or pizza with ham), then that food is NOT vegan, EVEN if the animal products are removed afterwards.
